Robert and Derek are Madame Flock. They are in the Terrassen Mosel, where a small band of winemakers are shaking things up. Wild ferments, no herbicides and just a little sulphur on bottling. The vineyards are crazily steep and hard to work, the wines have just the right amount of crazy too. We love them.
This sulphur free special Mad Dog we aged six months longer in barrel.
Mosel Fine Wines say:
The 2021er Mad Dog Warwick, as it is referred to on the label (named after Warwick Bruce Murray, a viticulturist in the Barossa Valley and a mentor who inspired this project), with lot L-Nr: MF 008 2022 is a bone-dry Riesling made along natural lines from 30-70-year-old vines in Winningen (Domgarten and Heidelberg), the Lehmener Ausoniusstein, and the Koberner Weissenberg, and the grapes were left to macerate for 24- 72 hours before being pressed. It was fermented without intervention and matured in French Barrique for 12 months before being transferred for a further 6 months into tank and subsequently bottled with no filtering, no fining, and with very little SO2 added (total SO2 is below 5 mg/l). This hayyellow- colored wine proves still quite backward and needs a few moments before revealing a stunningly pure and smoky nose of minty spices, licorice, Conference pear, yellow flowers, lime tree, and prune, all wrapped into ginger and cinnamon as well as beautifully smoky elements. The wine is stunningly balanced on the palate, where a touch of creaminess is superbly wrapped into ripe acidity and gorgeous flavors of citrusy fruits, a hint of funk, chalk, and fine spices. The finish is truly spectacular as it is intense, precise, and above all gloriously balanced. This stunning effort may well end up surpassing the incredible quality of the bottling released last year (without the addition aging in tank) as it develops its cut with age: What a great “low intervention” dry Riesling! 2025-2036
